讲座摘要
We build a patent-level measure of climate innovation by applying a large language model to U.S. patent text. The measure disagrees sharply with the Y02 classification. Of Y02-tagged patents, 68.7% are not confirmed by the LLM, and 52.1% of LLM-identified climate patents carry no Y02 label. Around two major U.S. climate-policy events, equity markets price the LLM measure but not Y02, which supports the LLM measure as a more accurate signal of firm-level climate exposure. We find that firms facing greater regulatory pressure, with stronger prior research capability, higher socially responsible institutional ownership, and stronger product-market competition produce more climate patents. At the patent level, LLM-identified climate patents receive more forward citations and shape the text of later inventions more persistently than non-climate patents. At the firm level, climate-patenting firms show slower growth in carbon emissions and receive higher environmental and ESG scores. They also trade at a Tobin’s Q discount, driven mainly by mitigation patents.
